Common Pelvic Health Disorders in Women

Women can experience a range of pelvic health disorders that may affect various aspects of their reproductive, urinary, bowel and gastrointestinal systems.

Here are some common pelvic health disorders in women:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID):

    • PID is an infection of the reproductive organs, often caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It can cause pelvic pain, inflammation, and potential long-term complications if left untreated.

  • Endometriosis:

    • Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis often creates pelvic pain, painful periods, and fertility issues.

  • Urinary Incontinence:

    • Urinary incontinence involves involuntary leakage of urine and can result from weakened pelvic floor muscles, hormonal changes, or childbirth. Urinary frequency and urgency can also indicate dysfunction.

  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse:

    • Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when pelvic organs, such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum, descend beyond the muscular openings which can be due to weak pelvic floor muscles.

  • Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS):

    • IC/BPS is a chronic condition characterized by bladder pain, urgency, and frequency.

  • Dyspareunia:

    • Dyspareunia refers to pain during sex (penetrative) and can result from various causes, including pelvic floor dysfunction, infections, or conditions like vaginismus.

  • Menstrual Disorders:

    • Menstrual disorders, such as irregular periods, heavy bleeding (menorrhagia), or absence of menstruation (amenorrhea), may indicate hormonal imbalances or other underlying issues with the pelvic floor.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS):

    • PCOS is a hormonal disorder characterized by cysts on the ovaries, irregular periods, and symptoms such as acne, weight gain, and excess hair growth.

  • Vulvodynia:

    • Vulvodynia is chronic pain or discomfort in the vulvar area without an identifiable cause. It can affect sexual function and overall well-being.

  • Cancers:

    • Cancers of the reproductive organs, such as ovarian, cervical, or uterine cancer, or the rectum can impact pelvic health. Early detection and treatment are crucial for better outcomes.

  • Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS):

    • Chronic pelvic pain is persistent pain in the pelvic region that may result from various conditions, including endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or musculoskeletal issues.

While modern women are slowly becoming more aware of the pelvic floor and pelvic health, there continues to be a need for support and education. Amazingly, women are seeking guidance from their PCP’s or gynecologists regarding their pelvic health. This is empowering and health conscious. Acupuncturists have unique toolsets to treat many of these conditions in comprehensive ways that address the core issue or dysfunction.
