Is an acupuncturist qualified to treat pelvic health issues?

You might have heard of Kegel exercises for your pelvic floor. You might have even heard of PT’s that work with the pelvic floor, but did you know that acupuncturists can support your pelvic health?

While some might think acupuncture a bit on the “woo”, your acupuncturists has gone through a rigorous schooling, clinical and training process to gain the knowledge, skills, and techniques to support you in a multitude of ways.

Here’s what your acupuncturist has done to assure you get the best pelvic care:

  • Education: Acupuncturists are trained in both Biomedical Knowledge and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Today in the US, most acupuncturists earn a Masters Degree and many go on to earn a Doctorate. General acupuncture education includes a lot of information on conditions related to reproductive health which often impacts the pelvic floor.

  • Acupuncture Clinicals: Acupuncturists undergo specific training in acupuncture techniques, needle insertion, and point selection in the clinic. Acupuncture students treat clients under the supervision of licensed acupuncturists. This training is crucial for them to effectively address various health issues and assure proficiency in developing and carrying out treatment plans.

  • Board Exams: For acupuncturists to practice acupuncture in the United States, they have to pass 3-4 Board Examinations which include: Acupuncture with Point Location, Foundations of Oriental Medicine, Biomedicine and Chinese Herbology.

  • Continuing Education: Acupuncturists are required to engage in continuing education to stay updated on the latest developments in acupuncture. The national guideline is 60 hours every 4 years, though some states are different.

  • Specialized Training in Pelvic Health: Acupuncturists who choose to specialize in pelvic health pursue additional training and certifications. This involves coursework, workshops, and clinical experience focused on pelvic anatomy, pelvic dysfunctions, treatment protocols based on TCM, dry needling and spirit of the points; as well as safety and ethics in treating the pelvis.

  • Holistic Approach: Acupuncturists are trained to approach health and wellness holistically. They consider the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit in their assessments and treatments. This holistic perspective is valuable when addressing pelvic health issues.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis: Acupuncturists use traditional diagnostic methods, such as pulse and tongue diagnosis, to assess imbalances in the body's energy. This diagnostic approach helps them identify the root causes of pelvic health issues and develop targeted treatment plans.

  • Communication and Patient Education: Qualified acupuncturists communicate effectively with patients, explaining the principles of TCM, the proposed treatment plan, and lifestyle recommendations. Patient education is a crucial aspect of empowering individuals to actively participate in their pelvic health and well-being.

  • Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals: Acupuncturists may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as gynecologists, urologists, or physical therapists, to provide integrated care for patients with pelvic health issues. This collaborative approach ensures a well-rounded and comprehensive treatment plan.
