Boys Play
On a brief morning off from our dance training in Cuba, my hubby and I made a trek out to Santa Maria del Mar, a gorgeous beach in Playa del Este just outside of Havana. As, I watched young boys chase each other, make water fights together, volley balls back and forth and body surfing in the waves, I realized there was little difference in the activities that the grown up boys were doing, albeit many of them also had beer.
I got to thinking about how as a little girl, when a boy once pulled my hair on the playground, I proceeded to have a complete meltdown, crying and all. Someone said to me that the boy just liked me and this is how he was trying to entice me to play with him. At the time, the adult’s words had little meaning to me and offered very little comfort to me.
As I watch my beloved frolicking in the waves, diving and taking photographs of the curls of the waves, I am reflect on my own path and how sometimes I react to something my husband does in play. Just as I say that, he returns to me, takes a sip of ice cold water and spits it all over me! I can’t help but laugh despite my immediate desire to throw a “what the f” his way.
Oh, thank you universe for this opportunity to put play into action right away! No, seriously! Had this not unfolded in the exact manner it had, there would me no accountability for me actually playing more!
Don’t we all really just want to play more?
I mean, isn’t play the primary purpose of why we came into physical form for this one unique life we are living? I challenge you to watch children, how they interact with their environment, their own creations and each other. There’s a lot we can learn from children about play.
And for those of you, like me, who have a husband, aka big kid around, watch him too and look closely at how he may be trying to entice you to play! It seems to more often than not, my hubby is not intentionally trying to do something to aggravate or annoy me, he’s following his dream and wants me to play along with him!
