Fire Element
The Fire Element is associated with the season of Summer, following Wood in the Sheng cycle and the season of Spring. Summer reminds us of long, beautiful, warm days. We become filled with warmth, joy and love. The summer is the time of peak activity. We become more social, fun, and relaxed in recreation. Summer enhances our connections with others and within ourselves and it reminds us of our ability to give and receive love with others. Summer is the future becoming real, when our desires and dreams are fulfilled.
Fire is the “inner sun” within. It is associated with the color red. It is associated with the smell of scorched. The sound is laughing or lack of laughing. The emotion is joy or lack of joy. The taste of the Fire Element is bitter. The direction of fire is South. The temperature is Heat, when lacking there isn’t enough, when there’s too much, there’s drought. Fire is in the time of the present - time stands still. The tongue is associated with the element of Fire. The tongue corresponds to our ability to communicate clearly and completely.
The power of fire is maturity, the seeds grow into ripe fruit upon the branches. Everything seems to reach its height of maturity in summer. Fire brings about this gift. Our capacity becomes expanded in the most vibrant light and energy. It is the time of the glorious zenith. Summer represents the biggest bounty you will give or receive. It is when connection is at its fullest. The hearts are the most open in summer. We feel warm within and invite others into our experience. Heat allows our vessels to be open - blood and Qi can be transformed and transported to fulfill the needs of our body, mind and spirt.
The first Yin organ associated with Fire is the Heart, the Supreme Controller. The Yang organ is the Small Intestine, the Separator of Pure and Impure. The Small Intestine serves as the secretary to the Heart and it transforms, refining fire. Another Yin organ of Fire is the Heart Protector, which protects the heart, opening us to appropriate relationships. Another Yang organ associated with Fire is the Triple Heater, which regulates temperature on the body, mind and spirit level. It helps us to gage the temperature of our relationships.
When the Fire Element is in balance, one might exhibit the following traits: communication, vulnerability, making friends easily, gregarious, humorous, delighting in intimacy, generosity, love, compassion, lightness, freedom, joy and liveliness. When the Fire Element is out of balance, its indicated by: sarcasm, loneliness, shut out, inability to sit quietly alone, the need for emotional stimulus of others, dreading the future, burning self out, depleted, co-dependency, lack of joy, cruel, volatile, unable to communicate - mute, stuttering, or slurring, promiscuity, hysterical, or mania. Those with a Fire imbalance might seem cold hearted. When Fire is in balance, love bathes every part of our lives.
